They appeared in court on charges of dealing in and cultivation of dagga on Friday, 9 July 2021.

Cpt van Wyk said in a statement on 9 July 2021 that police were tipped off about an illegal operation and moved swiftly to effect the arrests:

Cpt van Wyk said that upon entering the premises, a “hydroponic dagga laboratory” was uncovered, with 388 plants and a variety of equipment seized.

“Two suspects, aged 35 and 61 were arrested on charges of dealing in dagga and cultivation of dagga. The estimated street value of the dagga is R465 600,” he said.

In an unrelated matter later that day, members of the POPS unit received further information regarding another premises situated at a premises in Irene Street,  Monte Sereno, Somerset West.

“The premises was searched and members discovered an indoor dagga cultivation laboratory. Large quantities of dagga, dagga plants and equipment that the suspect use to plant the dagga have been seized.”

Cpt van Wyk said that the value of the seized weed is still to be determined, but it is estimated at a substantial amount. A 44-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of dealing in dagga and cultivation of dagga.

This is the second major cannabis bust in the Somerset West area this year. In March 2021, police arrested a 47 year old woman and 46 year old man during an “intelligence-drive” opration.

Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani said at the time:

“The investigation team pounced on the suspects at a house in Helena Heights in Somerset West, where they seized drugs with an estimated street value of R500 000. Dagga plants, syringes with dagga oil, magic mushrooms, capsules, six 5-litre bottles of ethanol are part of the exhibits that were seized. Cash suspected to be from the proceeds of the drug trade was also seized.”

It’s unclear where the prosecution status lies in this case.
