Among the many new medical cannabis service providers entering the fray is UK-based Professor Herb, which through its local franchise, Dr Kush, is offering an online cannabis buying service. Professor Herb’s main product line is distributing CBD products in Europe, but as of April, it has started selling ‘medical’ cannabis in South Africa outside the regulatory channels.

A UK-based company, Professor Herb, which describes itself as “the fastest growing CBD hemp brand in the UK and Europe” is touting free South African medical cannabis prescriptions.

Professor Herb’s website says it launched  its services in South Africa in April 2025. The Leciester-based company is encouraging people to sign up to buy medical cannabis online with incentives such as zero consultation fees, zero monthly membership fees, zero repeat prescription fees”, a choice of over 200 strains, and delivery in as “little as two hours”.

Professor Herb's South African partner is 'Dr Kush', who's website is a replica of Professor Herb's South African page. Neither site offers any indication of who the individuals are behind the venture, which is clearly in breach of SAHPRA guidelines. It offers quick deliveries with payment via "Apple Pay, Google Pay, Credit Card, Debit Card, Bank Transfer, Crypto Currency".

Professor Herb's main business is clearly in the CBD market where it says it is "pioneering alternative blends and tobacco substitutes with its "dynamic line of hemp-based products and smoking accessories".

On its home page, Professor Herb declares: "Our products are strictly zero THC, zero tobacco and zero nicotine".

However, at the bottom of the home page, a discreet link reads Apply for a South African Medical Cannabis Prescription, which then takes one to a 'pre-registration' page offering free prescriptions and a choice of over 200 THC strains that can be delivered to your door.

Neither Professor Herb nor Dr Kush make mention of Section 21 of the Medicines Act, under which cannabis can be legally prescribed in South Africa. Neither to they provide any details of prescribing doctors or processes. Simply fill in the form.

The Professor Herb medical cannabis distribution model in South Africa is illegal. Not that this counts for much out here in the Wild West!.

From the Dr Kush site:

In South Africa, medical cannabis products may be prescribed for any health condition, once the presiding physician determines that it could assist in treatment. Patients may request medical cannabis through authorised health practitioners who are licensed by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

Recreational use of cannabis became legal in 2018 following the constitutional court’s ruling in Minister of Justice v Prince. 1 In the matter of Minister of Justice v Prince, the court ruled that adults may, for their personal consumption, use, possess and cultivate cannabis in private.
