Child’s name: Little Pharma
Performance: Little Pharma is very neat, attentive in class and judiciously does its homework. It is a stickler for protocol and always tries to hide behind the rule-book when criticized for anything. Unfortunately , Little Pharma is not very popular with the other children who think it has eyes only for its older sibling, Big Pharma. Little Pharma tries to play token games with children from other schools but they accuse it of being racist and unfair and Little Pharma gets beaten frequently and often unfairly. For some reason this seems to suit its classmates who do little to help when Little Pharma comes to them in floods of tears..
Recommendation: Little Pharma must stop playing its token games outside school and its grade is sure to improve; also it’s sibling Big Pharma should have as little influence on it as possible.
2021 Departmental Summary
SAHPRA: Everybody’s Favourite Political Football
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) persistently claims that it is only a regulator there to enforce the product safety and quality and it doesn’t make the rules. This hasn’t stopped it from being the target of legitimate rage by all manner of stakeholders who accuse it of being in the pocket of Big Pharma. It’s hard to find evidence to the contrary – 40 indoor medicinal licenses issued so far in a country of 900 000 outdoor farmers. SAHPRA hides behind the rule book saying the system is wrong. However, not everyone is convinced and the regulator could be more proactive and ease its self-inflicted pain by trying to remove internal bottlenecks to the system.
