Hello ‘Cannabis Contract Farming’: SA’s CBD Pharma Outsources Grow-Op to Highlands in Lesotho

South Africa’s CBD Pharma Farms is about to become Africa’s first “contract cannabis farmer”. It has taken its offtake agreement to Lesotho, where Highlands Investments has pioneered a new model whereby it grows cannabis on behalf of outside customers through its Canna-Tract system.

Canna-Tract enables companies to grow commercial volumes of medical-grade cannabis without having to obtain a license or invest in developing their own facilities. Companies select a cultivation and payment plan that suits their needs; the cultivation plan may include using Highlands’s genetics or providing their own.

Grabouw-based CBD Pharma has contracted for two hectares of Highlands’ Cherry Wine CBD genetics for this season, Cherry Wine is one of the foundational CBD strains, which is widely used because of its high quality.

“We are delighted that CBD Pharma chose to partner with Highlands to cultivate their cannabis,” says Highlands Investments MD, Mark Corbett. “Having completed four successful harvests, we have fine-tuned our processes further and are skilled at growing, packaging and processing commercial volumes of premium flower.”

Highlands Investments expects to sell six tons of cannabis flower and Europe in 2021. The company says it concluded its fourth and most successful harvest at its Kolojane facility in Lesotho.

The ISO 22000 certified outdoor harvest was exported to Europe in the form of bulk CBD and THC flower, distillate and isolate to global medical and wellness markets.  The company’s future harvests are likely to go towards supplying leading CBD brand, Goodleaf, with cannabis for its range of health and wellness products. This follows the merger of the two companies, announced on 2 June 2021 (See story here)
