Veteran Knysna cannabis grower Deon Joubert has won the Garden Route Cannabis Cup for his superior Exodus Cheese

The Garden Route Cannabis Festival, which was held from 6 – August 2021, centered around the Dankipa private venue, attracted over 500 people.

Joubert won after a unanimous decision by the six judges who sampled the wares of the 22 entrants at the Dankipa, home of Cannaclub which is part of the Garden Route Organic Cannabis Growers Association (GROCGA). GROCGA was formed to represent serious small-scale organic & other growers from the Garden Route and to establish a local brand awareness, quality insurance through good practice & standards, transparency and an offset for their local produce.

“We got a lot more interest than we thought we would,” festival organizer Leon Meyer told Cannabiz Africa on 10 August 2021. “The end of the lockdown restrictions came just in time and we attracted people from all over the country, Cape Town, Jo’burg, Durban-side; Plettenberg Bay Tourism even congratulated us for marketing the town so well. There were a lot of cannabis people in town but there was no harassment by police, car accidents or violent incidents. In fact, the only time the police were called out over the weekend was to deal with some drunken kids after the Springboks beat the Lions”.

Meyer, arrested two weeks ago for sending cannabis samples to the judges, was upbeat about the post-festival outlook. “It’s all about education and breaking down stigmas and the festival did just that,” he said.
